Twentieth Metro Train on its Way to Sofia

On 20 May 2019, the twentieth underground train for Sofia Metro left NEWAG’s production plant in Nowy Sącz. It was the last train ordered within the basic contract scope. The order is being implemented by SIMETRO Consortium comprising Siemens Mobility GmbH Austria in Vienna, Siemens Mobility EOOD in Sofia and NEWAG S.A.

Under the contract signed on 28.09.2015, the Consortium undertook to provide Metropolitan EAD 20 three-unit metro vehicles. The Contracting Authority decided to exercise the option and the delivery of another ten trains will start in 2020.

The Inspiro vehicles are characterised by high energy efficiency, low cost of operation as well as modern design and solutions improving the comfort of travelling. The Inspiro trains for Sofia are additionally fitted with pantographs on the roof enabling their operation also using another power supply system.

The transit of the vehicle is done according to the procedures for specialised oversized transport. Accordingly, it must be conducted at night accompanied by a special convoy of other cars – pilots in order to ensure the highest level of safety while moving on public roads. Due to its big size, the underground train was divided into modules which will be transported on three separate lorries. The modules have been specially secured for the period of transportation. They will cover more than 1100 km on the route leading through Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia to Sofia – the capital of Bulgaria.
